Vitamin D plays a crucial role in modulating the immune system. Adequate levels may help regulate immune responses and reduce chronic inflammation, potentially alleviating symptoms such as fatigue and muscle weakness in long COVID patients.

Vitamin D binds to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a nuclear receptor expressed in various cells, including immune cells. Upon activation, the VDR modulates gene expression, leading to the production of antimicrobial peptides like cathelicidin and defensins, which enhance innate immunity. Vitamin D also suppresses the proliferation of pro-inflammatory Th17 cells and promotes the development of regulatory T cells, maintaining immune homeostasis and preventing excessive inflammatory responses.
